What is a home? For many, it’s a haven of privacy and peace. For New York–based artist and event producer Linden Renz, it’s a space where anything is possible.

For years, Linden had been throwing parties, performances, and events in various lofts in Bushwick, but these borrowed, makeshift spaces offered little in the way of autonomy and creative control.

“I knew I wanted to build a living space for myself that had utility,” explains Linden. “I wanted more autonomy, more permanence, more creativity, and flexibility.” So when he stumbled upon an open-concept, 1,800-square-foot loft in Williamsburg, he saw the potential for something special—a place to call home that also functioned as a modular, hybrid space for whatever Linden and his artist friends came up with next.

Ever the collaborator, Linden assembled a dream team of architects: Ignacio G. Galán, Jesse McCormick, and Future Projects’ Khoi Nguyen and Julie Tran to develop an evolving, intimate events space that could also function as a residence. The loft became just that, with a warm, textural, deeply flexible design that adapts to suit the artist’s evolving whims.

As they planned the space, Linden and the architecture team drew from the neighborhood’s boho history—from the creative revolution of the ’60s to the early 2000s Williamsburg revival. “We wanted something that operated informally, and that could be a place where the cultural fabric of New York City came together,” says Galán.

To create a space where anything could happen, the team kept the floor plan open and flexible. Geometric volumes subtly define distinct areas without closing anything in, while folding doors provide privacy when needed. The custom sofa—built on lockable casters—breaks into pieces and rolls out of the way, fitting snugly into a nook in the corner. “We considered the programming of the space in terms of equipment, rather than rooms,” explains Galán.

While Linden produces events himself, his dream for the space is for other artists to take the lead, too. “We thought a lot about how to imagine a space that invites other users of the space to be hosts themselves,” says Galán. It’s a home for Linden and his creative community—all in an inspiring, flexible space that’s a work of art, in and of itself.
